In our office, major
emphasis is placed on the initial diagnosis. Due to the myriad of symptoms
that can be related to a TMJ problem, it is vital that the original diagnosis be
as accurate as possible. This enables us to treat the patient in the
shortest amount of time and to gain the greatest results.
At your initial visit, we will take an
extensive medical history along with a complete charting of current symptoms and
previous treatments by other professionals. In some cases, an impression
for a Mandibular Decompression Appliance, or MDA, is taken. When inserted,
this soft, vinyl mouthpiece will relax painful muscles, help correct jaw and
neck posture and will help to determine the source of the TMJ problem.
Finally, you will have time to ask questions and you will be scheduled for the
appropriate diagnostic testing. The initial visit usually lasts about one
hour.
